Der Lungenkrebs gehört beim Mann, zunehmend aber auch bei der Frau zu den häufigsten Todesursachen. Früherkennung führt nachweislich zu einer verbesserten Heilungschance. Ein erhöhtes Lungenkrebsrisiko besteht bei Rauchern, langjährigem intensiven beruflichen Asbestkontakt, aber auch wenn ein Elternteil an Lungenkrebs erkrankt oder verstorben ist.
In einer groß angelegten Studie mit über 50.000 Teilnehmern stellte sich heraus, dass über 55-jährige Raucher bzw. Ex-Raucher von einem Vorsorgeprogramm eindeutig profitieren: Die Sterblichkeit an Lungenkrebs konnte bei den Teilnehmern durch das Vorsorgeprogramm um 20 % gesenkt werden. Der Unterschied war so ausgeprägt, dass die Studie aus ethischen Gründen abgebrochen wurde.

Das Vorsorgeprogramm besteht aus wenig belastenden Computertomographieuntersuchungen (CT) in Niedrigdosistechnik und ohne Kontrastmittelinjektion. Drei Untersuchungen werden im Abstand von je einem Jahr durchgeführt. Die Untersuchungen sind völlig schmerzfrei und dauern nur wenige Minuten.
Obwohl die Vorsorgeuntersuchung bereits von zahlreichen amerikanischen und europäischen medizinischen Fachgesellschaften empfohlen werden, können die Kosten im Moment noch nicht von den gesetzlichen Krankenkassen übernommen werden.
