Musculoskeletal diagnostics is a specialty of radiology that has developed rapidly in recent years. The focus is on diseases of the spine, joints, tendons and muscles.
The radiologist must classify whether these are signs of wear and tear, overload reactions or the consequences of an accident. In addition, it is important to detect rarer but often serious diseases (tumors, rheumatic diseases or infections) in good time in order to prevent progressive damage.

Sports Medicine
Our sports medicine experts Prof. Dr. Mack and Prof. Dr. Regier have made a special mark in musculoskeletal radiology for many years at university hospitals and in practice. Their expertise is used by the professional soccer players of FC Bayern and the German national soccer team, among others.
Bone density
Bone densitometry is therefore a reliable method of assessing the risk of osteoporosis. Decreased levels of calcium salts increase the risk of bone fractures and bone loss may occur. Particular attention must be paid to women in menopause, malnutrition, heavy tobacco or alcohol use, and hyperthyroidism.
Bone age
Bone age determination will be used for maturity assessment of (young) people. From calculating prospective adult height to identifying endocrinological disorders, growth disorders, and many orthopedic conditions, a variety of issues can be addressed.
Radiologie München – our locations
In the Munich metropolitan area, Radiologie München offers various locations where musculoskeletal diagnostics are performed. Our specialists in sports medicine are located on Säbener Straße – Prof. Dr. Mack – and in the Altes Hof in the center of Munich – Prof. Dr. Regier. Areas of musculoskeletal diagnostics
“Musculoskeletal” refers to anything related to the human skeleton and muscles, ligaments and joints. An examination in one of our practices can make use of different methods:
- Digital radiography
- Sonography
- CT
- MRI
The aim of the examination is to check for injuries and to clarify possible pathological changes in the entire musculoskeletal system. Some of our sites have special forms, such as osteoporosis diagnostics.
Sports Medicine
Sports put a lot of strain on the muscles and the joint and ligament apparatus. In professional sports, the stress is even more potent. Depending on the injury, radiological diagnostics play a very important role. Footballers from the Bundesliga are currently undergoing magnetic resonance imaging almost routinely for muscle injuries. The images show the extent of the injury and the affected areas – an optimal basis for rapid treatment.
Bone Density Measurement
Bone densitometry measures the mineral salt content of the bones. This content decreases naturally with age in every person. However, if this degradation progresses too quickly or very abruptly, for example due to osteoporosis, this development must be evaluated. Osteoporosis can be diagnosed very early and without stressing the patient by measuring bone density, so-called osteodensitometry.
Bone age
There are several reasons for determining bone age in children. In addition to a pure determination of the physical maturity of the child, the focus is on the assessment of the developmental status with regard to growth disorders. In this context, both inhibited development and very rapid growth may indicate possible diseases.
